Twitter for MAC updated for Notification Center

Twitter for Mac is continuously receiving updates and today it received a highly requested feature: Notification Center integration. Users can configure the setting in the preference window within the app.

What’s New in Version 2.2.1
Notification Center integration: receive notifications when someone mentions you or when you receive a Direct Message. You can configure this from the app’s Preferences window.

This update also includes the following changes:
* Fix for Growl notifications not working in Lion and Mountain Lion
* Fix for bug that prevented un-favoriting tweets
* Fix for missing account switcher in composer
* Fix for error message when posting a tweet with a pasted image
* Fix for enlarged avatar when dragging a tweet into an email
* Fixes for crashes and various other bugs

Flickr upgraded, confuses current PRO members

As a longtime user of Flickr, I was happy to see Yahoo! announced the enhancements of Flickr. It has been a long time coming. The site needed to be upgraded for sharing capabilities (specifically password protect albums/files, it still doesnt do that right) and a layout.

What we got was an overhaul and commitment from Yahoo! to improve the once loved site. All users now will get 1TB of storage. For FREE. Obviously ad revenue will be the income, but users can now pay $49.99 a year to get the ads removed. This seems like a steep price and sounds like Yahoo! is banking on none using this just for ad removal. This is where it gets interesting and confusing. The only advantage of paying $49.99 a year is ad removal, different than the current PRO upgrades (stats, larger files etc). You could also pay a whopping $499 for 2TB account, but why not just use two free accounts to get the 2TB, or two $49.99 accounts and split your files among them.

Current PRO members pay $24 a year, can be grandfathered in with automatic renewal and keep their current rate . No new PRO members are allowed, and as of right now, no expiration date on the renewal for current PRO members, so not sure if we can just renew once and then be forced or forever keep renewing for the past prices.

If there mobile app can be upgraded to include auto-upload your camera roll like other storage apps (pogoplug, dropbox, etc), then it would be even better for Flickr.

“Promises Not To Screw It Up”

I visited the Tumblr offices Friday. Seemed like an amazing place to work, yet not one really seemed that happy. It could be the atmosphere of the “start-up” where everyone is working non-stop, and no matter if you have a ping pong table and keg in the office, its still a very stressful environment. It could have been the pending Yahoo buyout that maybe had them scared and also unwilling to make a comment about that possibility.

I have been using Tumblr for a while now, and still do not know how they make money. I know they introduced some minor ads, but I have never ever really seen them. It seemed that Tumblr employees knew they were running strapped for cash without a huge ad takeover (like Facebook, ugh), and it was something their CEO was discussing about the upcoming months. I guess a $1.1 billion cash buyout, and still retain their independent like structure is a good move, but unclear of what the future brings for the 175 employees in NYC, and what Yahoo plans to do to generate a profit.

I have been very impressed with Yahoo the past year, I hope they dont mess this up.

Beginning today, Microsoft is rolling out their Google Chat integration to Outlook.com users. When you open the Messaging pane in Outlook.com or SkyDrive, you’ll see a message that helps you set up chat with your Google contacts. Just click it to get started; setup will only take a minute.

Kingston has released a pretty interesting new product. MobileLite Wireless will allow you to share any content from SD cards or USB drives. It creates an Ad-hoc wireless network, very similar to their existing WiFi drive.

What is also great about it, is that it has the capability to charge your USB device. You can copy and share files within drives, or share to Twitter/Facebook from within their apps, and share with up to 3 users simultaneously. The device packs 5 hours of usage before needed to be charged up.

I can see photographers and other professionals that use multiple storage types for taking (SDHC) and storing photos (USB drive) using this type of device for mobile shoots.

The wiretap laws are currently in the process of being re-written and possible changed to allow the government to access more of your digital communications. This will include your email, Google Chat, Skype, Facebook messages and more.

The FBI’s proposal required Internet communications services to each build in a wiretapping capacity, the revised one, which must now be reviewed by the White House, focuses on fining companies that do not comply with wiretap orders.
